Kolkata-based sustainability innovator Amwoodo has secured $4 million (approximately ₹33.5 crore) in a pre-Series A funding round, led by existing backer Rainmatter, the Zerodha-supported venture fund focused on climate and social impact. Joining as new participants are Adventz Group, Thinkuvate, and Caspian, bringing Amwoodo’s total funding to over $4 million across three rounds. This infusion validates the startup’s mission to harness bamboo’s rapid renewability—growing up to 91 cm a day—for eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics.

The round, finalized in September 2025, underscores investor confidence in Amwoodo’s blend of profitability and purpose, especially amid India’s escalating plastic waste crisis, which exceeds 3.5 million tonnes annually.

Amwoodo’s Roots: From Northeast Bamboo to Global Impact

Founded in 2019 by Agni Mitra, Sourav Dey, and Avijit Rajak, Amwoodo emerged from Kolkata’s strategic proximity to India’s bamboo-rich Northeast, where 66% of the nation’s bamboo forests thrive. Frustrated by China’s dominance in imported bamboo goods, the trio invested in local machinery and artisan training to build a resilient supply chain, reducing import dependency and empowering rural communities.

Today, Amwoodo operates across B2B and B2C channels, boasting partnerships with giants like Himalaya Wellness, Bombay Shaving Company, and ITC Hotels. Its portfolio spans personal care items (toothbrushes, combs), hospitality essentials (cutlery, towels), and advanced materials like bamboo polymer composites and veneers— all designed to biodegrade without microplastics. Certified as a Great Place to Work®, Amwoodo has clocked ₹21.72 crore in FY24 revenue, targeting ₹60 crore this year.

Deployment Strategy: Scaling Production and Market Reach

Amwoodo plans to channel the funds into tripling production capacity at its Northeast facilities, fortifying its direct-to-consumer platform Ecoconscious, and unveiling fresh brands under the House of Amwoodo umbrella. Ecoconscious, a curated D2C marketplace, will expand its reach, making bamboo alternatives accessible to urban eco-shoppers while fostering community-driven innovation.

This capital expenditure push aligns with India’s bamboo mission, aiming to cultivate 1 million hectares by 2030, positioning Amwoodo as a catalyst for green manufacturing jobs and circular economies.
